The Traveling Wilburys were founded after Jeff Lynne produced George Harrison’s Cloud Nine album. The major hit from that album was “I got my mind set on you,” a cover of a 1962 song.

Stevie Nicks was easily the most popular member of the revamped Fleetwood Mac, she provided backup vocals for numerous other acts and released her own album, Belladonna in 1980. One of the songs on Bella Donna was a duet with Tom Petty, Stop Draggin’ my heart around.

From the mid-70′s to the early 80′s one of the most popular groups was Fleetwood Mac. Not only did they put out the best-selling record of the time, rumors, but their members were involved in many other projects. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham backed up John Stewart in the Midnight Wind. It was after that the pair joined the group that Fleetwood Mac became huge.

When I was looking this up I learned something impressive about Stevie Nicks.

In late 2004, Nicks began visiting Army and Navy medical centers in Washington, D.C. While visiting wounded service men and women, Nicks became determined to find an object she could leave with each soldier that would raise their spirits, motivate, and give them something to look forward to each day. She eventually decided to purchase hundreds of iPod Nanos, load them with music, artists, and play-lists which she would hand select, and autograph them. She now regularly delivers these tokens of her appreciation, bringing her closest friends to share the experience.

Last week, I featured the Monkees’ “Daydream Believer.” “Daydream Believer” was written by John Stewart. Stewart had been a member of the Kingston Trio (though he joined late, well after Tom Dooley, which was based on true story), but later had a hit with Gold. As with some other songs on his comeback album, “Gold” was backed by Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. So too was “Midnight Wind.” “Midnight Wind” is like Billy Joel’s “Only the good die young,” but without the snarkiness.

OK, last week I wrote about Smokey Robinson’s version of Tracks of my tears. I have to admit that though I like the song a lot, I much prefer Linda Ronstadt’s version. I much prefer the guitar work in the cover version.

Tracks of my tears – Smokey Robinson and the Miracles

I was just listening to a CD with some great Motown hits, including the original, Tracks of my Tears. Smokey Robinson is a great songwriter and I say that because I think that there is no better pop song than “My Girl.” Recently though, I learned that it’s not just his songwriting that set him apart. Here’s Pete Townshend of The Who:

The lyric, so applauded by rock critics, was thrown together very quickly. Smokey Robinson sang the word ‘substitute’ so perfectly in TRACKS OF MY TEARS- my favorite song at the time- that I decided to celebrate the word itself with a song all its own.
