Columbine and Parkland, the Common Thread

Vassar Bushmills

I’m not a student of school shootings, except to take note of the shooters, many of whom, from Virginia Tech to Sandy Hook in Connecticut to even Dylan Roof in South Carolina, were mentally ill but able to get a gun anyway, only not so much because of their easy availability as to fatal flaws in the bureaucratic system that were designed to prevent the mentally unstable to get weapons. Bureaucracies do that, which is why there can never be any kind of gun “control”.

A decade has gone by since Virginia Tech and most of the gaps in mental health awareness from that event remain unfilled because the Left’s anti-gun lobby continue to keep their eyes fixed on solving a problem of their ethereal Utopian world of World Order, totally disarming a constitutionally-protected armed populace.

As long as fractures in mental health protections fail, they can continue to keep their eye on the larger prize.

So it will be with the shooting in Broward County, Florida, at Margery Stoneman Douglas High School near Ft Lauderdale. We know where the media and the Left will take this; 1) denying access to guns, and 2) a failure of due diligence by local officials at the school and local police to identify several hundreds of thousands 18-20 year old kids of looking and dressing scary, talking big on social media, making broad statements about shooting and mayhem, but falling short of “legal threats” (as the FBI found with Cruz), and in some way interdict them.

Leftists believe anyone who disagrees with them, much less picks up a gun, is mentally deficient or mentally disturbed. This in turn justifies some sort of physical constraints and invasion of privacy.

I’m not sure how long it will take for public pressure to cause the Parkland school and police to kneel at the foot of political correctness and admit that they should implement new programs to more quickly identify angry young kids, white males at least, so as to give the rest of the community a heads-up every-time that kid walks down the street.

I’m sure that’s what the political Left would like to see happen, which is how they see mass shootings; an opportunity for some small victory.

In hindsight we’re told he should have been identified, tagged and written up, with BOLO posters at least, spread around where anti-socials might frequent, including, if circumstances dictated, all the gun stores. Only this had already been tried and failed in Tucson, where a young mental case-killer was lucky enough to have a mom work for the county sheriff, who was also the local Democratic Party boss. His name was Jared Lee Loughner and he killed a federal judge and Rep Gabby Giffords, and everyone pretty much knew he was certifiable for a long time. Much worse than Viktor Cruz in Florida.

Jared Lee Loughner mugshot released by Arizona Sheriff’s office

What we learned from that episode is that the Democrats only view prevention and public safety for “we” and not “thou”.

George Carlin, in a semi-serious comedy routine in the 60s, remarked that the Texas Tower sniper, Charles Whitman (a little before your time) may have snapped because someone put a bottle of Scope in his mailbox (also a little before your time). Whitman killed 13 on the spot, and wounded 31. Clearly mentally ill at the time, there was no sign of any illness before he went on his rampage. No clues or heads-up about what was to come. He just snapped. No one knows why.

In 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold did essentially the same thing at Columbine High School in Aurora, Colorado. Only they didn’t snap. The planned the attack, down to great detail, killing 13 and wounding 21, before killing themselves.

Columbine was much like the Parkland school in Florida, a very affluent neighborhood. Harris and Klebold had left diaries revealing a romance with the Oklahoma City bombing, only not to the political motive, just the manner of killing. They were huge video war gamers. It was cool. And no one at home ever noticed. The modern up-scale family.

As Wikipedia put it:

“The massacre sparked debate over gun control laws, high school cliques, subcultures and bullying. It resulted in an increased emphasis on school security with zero tolerance with policies, (about what?) and a moral panic over goth culture, gun culture, social outcasts, the use of pharmaceutical anti-depressants by teenagers, teenage Internet use, and violence in video games.”

It might be a good time to go back and dig up some of the papers on the various underlying causes of Columbine, for I’m certain most are valid…and try to extend those to a youth culture today wrapped even more deeply in social media as well as video game violence. Extend some of those sights and sounds to what we in fact see regularly in college venues populated by, if not the best and brightest, at least the most affluent of America’s high school grads, largely from liberal communities such as Parkland. They are breeding grounds for popular violent gangs such as Antifa, (such a sweet looking boy) where the dgree of violence seems to be ticking up weekly.

Oh, Parkland is represented in Congress by Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, THE Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, one of the most blue districts in the South.

If you’ll note Wikipedia did not mention as a cause for concern an absence of active, involved parenting and a general moral training, you know, church, Sunday School. And Bill Clinton made a special trip to Aurora to absolve the parents of that community of any sin for having raised their children so rottenly.

That common thread

If you want to find a common thread on many if not all the school shootings in the past dozen years, look no further than affluent surroundings, absentee parenting, if not absentee parents, indulged, purposeless lives, no moral teaching, no sense of the value of life, an immersion into being taught to hate everything that is opposite of what they are taught to believe, a complete immersing in liberal cultural as practiced at home and taught in schools.

America is filled with communities such as these and that common thread is that they are all staunchly liberal-to-Left Democratic. Liberals aren’t stupid, at least that kind of stupid. How can you create communities like these and not expect a few mutations to arise, a Klebold, a Harris, a Loughner, a Cruz? How can you teach children to sate themselves with self-love then teach them to hate dissent, and not expect a few to go solo and go rogue. Raising godless, sullen children will someday produce godless, sullen adults.

Today, it’s lone wolf killers as in South Florida, but soon it will be legions of Antifa soldiers, from that same common thread, filing out to slay old men in wheelchairs instead of windmills.

And they will not call them mentally-ill. They will call them gangs.

An open letter to Democrat inner city residents and minorities

I want to help inner city residents and minorities learn that the Democrats are not their friends — and that Trump is. I’ve tried to do so in this letter.

Dear Inner City Residents and Minorities Who Relentlessly Vote Democrat:

If you look at economic numbers for the years from 2008 through 2016 (when Democrats-controlled Congress or when President Obama was making rules without running them through Congress first), you will notice a few very clear trends:

  1. The overall economy was bad following the 2008 recession.
  2. The overall economy never recovered for people living in inner cities, especially blacks and Hispanics. These groups had the highest unemployment and the lowest wage recovery. Incidentally, inner city communities, Hispanics, and blacks are all loyal Democrat voters.
  3. The communities that did spectacularly well during that same time — enjoying high employment, high wages — were government workers in and around Washington, D.C. and a whole bunch of Democrat white people clustered in places like the San Francisco Bay Area or the wealthy suburbs of New York and Chicago.  Many of these rich white Democrats, by the way, got rich(er) thanks to policies that allowed them to grab lots of government money. These people, too, are overwhelmingly Democrat voters.

Conclusion: Democrat policies are great for Washington bureaucrats and Democrat rich people and not so great for inner city residents, blacks, and Hispanics.

In the year since Trump became president, there have been a few more very clear trends:

  1. The overall economy has grown spectacularly.
  2. When it comes to jobs, the biggest beneficiaries have been blacks and Hispanics.
  3. Under Donald Trump, the number of government employees is shrinking drastically: employees who quit aren’t being replaced; employees who do a terrible job (for example, Veterans Administration employees who let vets die without medical care) are getting fired; and President Trump is challenging and sometimes firing upper level employees in the FBI, the IRS, the DOJ, etc., who refuse to acknowledge that he is president or to work with his administration.
  4. The people protesting most loudly against Trump, and the ones pouring the most money and energy into destroying him, are those same people who got rich (or richer) during the Obama years and who are now seeing their cozy relationship with government vanish. That is, they want to restore their glory years, not preserve and protect yours.

Conclusion: Democrats don’t care about you. If they did, they would embrace President Trump’s policies because those policies are benefiting you in ways Americans haven’t seen since the 1980s. Instead, they care only about themselves and this is true no matter how often they insist that they, and not Donald Trump, have your interests at heart.

I happen not to believe that Donald Trump is a racist. But even if he is, who cares? His policies are not racist.

And I happen not to believe Democrat claims that they are not racists. You know why? Because their policies invariably inflicted the greatest economic and social damage on blacks and Hispanics. Just as Trump’s deeds suggest an absence of racism, Democrat deeds suggest its presence.

Don’t be fooled by the headlines. The only people trying to destroy Trump and bring back the Obama years are the only ones who made money during those years — and they are definitely not you.

There’s a great quotation that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Whenever you vote Democrat, you get poorer and they get richer — and that’s never going to change, because that’s what always happens to poor people when Democrats are in power. They get a lot of loving lip service, and some trickle-down welfare, but no wealth. Instead, their communities just get worse and worse.

Outside of the Reagan and Trump years, the damage Democrats inflict on inner cities and minorities is true even when there are Republicans in Washington, D.C. That’s because, no matter what’s going on in Washington, local Democrat politicians are still sucking wealth out of the communities, all in the name of “saving them” and “building them up” and “social justice.” Things were better during the Reagan and Trump years only because their financial growth policies were so strong they were even able to penetrate, just a bit, the straight-jacket local Democrat politicians impose on the communities in their care.

By the way, before you hare off in the wrong direction, the answer to this problem is not to kill or drive-out all the white people and then take their wealth. If you look at Zimbabwe, you can see how badly that approach to expanding wealth turns out. Except for the American Revolution, which imposed liberty, all other revolutions impose tyranny — and in a tyranny, you basically have exactly what we have now, which is a small bunch of rich people at the top and a lot of struggling people at the bottom.

The secret to wealth for the great number of people is liberty: personal liberty and a free market economy. In a free society, instead of a limited sum of money that those in power always divide unfairly (after first taking a cut for themselves), in a free society everyone can benefit. Free people use the wealth that government doesn’t hoard, misuse, or give to favorites to create things that benefit everyone . . . and that do so at ever lower prices.

Think of it this way: A tyranny is a world in which a few people shop at Saks Fifth Avenue and everyone else takes what they can find at Goodwill. A free market society with personal liberty is one in which everyone can shop at an endless variety of stores.

So, here’s a suggestion: During the midterm elections in 2018 and then again in 2020, try something new for a change. Instead of repeatedly voting for the same Democrats who put money in their pockets while you struggle in endless poverty, vote for the Republican candidate. After all, it’s hard for things to get worse for you and, as the Trump economy shows, they could get better.

Voting out the Democrats will be your revolution, as you abandon their soft tyranny (which hides self-profit behind words of “love”) and embrace conservative liberty (which can be tactless, but that always benefits the greatest number of people).

One more thing: Stop acting as if there’s a racial component to going to school, working hard, and following the law. There isn’t. These are behaviors available to all reasoning, intelligent human beings, and they almost invariably benefit economically those who follow them.

As always, political and activist Democrats are lying to you when they encourage you to engage in behaviors they personally avoid and that keep you stuck in poverty. You’d be a fool not to notice that, even as they tell you not to live a self-disciplined life, they do live that life, they stay out of jail, they get good jobs, and they make money.

Dear Democrats: Stop projecting your racism onto Trump

If you’re looking for racism in the immigration debate, look to the Democrats who are projecting against Trump’s race-free words their own vile race hatred.

Donald Trump disputes that he used the word “shithole” when referring to countries the citizens of which do not confer a benefit on America when they immigrate here. He did, however, acknowledge that he used strong language to say that America does not have an obligation to take in immigrants that harm her. Outside of Blue enclaves, in which residents live behind high walls with alarm systems and security guards, ordinary Americans knew precisely what he meant — and were grateful to him for saying so.

As with all other debates (abortion, war, unions, etc.), Democrats are stuck firmly in a pre-modern past. In their mind, immigration is perpetually about the era from 1860 through 1910. Back then, in a pre-technological age, with a population half what it is now, America needed bodies and lots of them. We needed factory workers and street sweepers and house cleaners and tunnel diggers and bridge builders and horse drivers and, during the early 1860s, bodies to be thrown into the Civil War.

Nowadays, America’s needs are different. While there will always be a place for physical labor, the reality is that technology is (a) doing away with brute force labor, whether in farms, factories, or fast food and (b) making literacy a necessity for most aspects of American life.

Moreover, modern America has limited (to no) tolerance for people who can’t use toilets; who murder women for “dishonoring” the family; who murder gays just for being; who espouse murdering Jews as a central tenet of their faith; who murder and dismember albinos for good luck charms; who mutilate little girls by cutting off their external genitalia; who support general slavery or sexual slavery; and who have a disproportionate predilection for rape and pedophilia.

Does this mean that every person from those cultures holding those values is going to commit acts that are anathema in America?* Of course not! But if you’re calculating the odds that one person will be more simpatico to American culture than another, countries of origin matter. Some share our values or at least are not opposed to our values. East Asian immigrants have very different cultural practices from those in America, but their work ethic is in sync with the American work ethic and their cultural practices enrich, rather than attack, the American way of life.

It’s worth noting here that it’s not just countries mired in violence and corruption that give birth to values we don’t want in America. If I had a say in the matter, I’d also argue that, as a Constitutional country, we should have less tolerance for people from socialist countries who, having destroyed freedom on their shores, seek to import their socialism to ours. As far as I’m concerned, we should shut the door on Sweden and large chunks of Western Europe. Meanwhile, Poles and Hungarians are proving pretty damn stalwart.

I’m also hostile to people who advocate legitimately insane positions, such as, for example, those at Google who claim that they are simultaneously animals, people, and buildings. In their own way, these people are just as destructive as the rapists and murderers. And perhaps it’s not a coincidence that some of the loudest SJWs at Google seem to have come from outside of America. . . .

As a general principle, I do not believe that America, despite her immigrant-friendly history, is obligated to take in immigrants at all. We take them because they benefit us, not because there’s some rule forcing us to do so.

In this view, I differ from James Comey, a man whose endless moral condescension is especially irritating given the fact that he deliberately acted to protect Hillary Clinton from her grossly illegal conduct and then violated America’s national security laws himself by handing out classified information in order to bring down a duly elected president. I don’t know about you, but I hate seeing criminals place themselves on a pedestal to lecture me.

Anyway, Comey likes to think he’s smarter than the next person, so his response to Trump’s allegedly crude reference to countries whose citizens do not benefit America was to . . . quote the Emma Lazarus poem on the base of the Statue of Liberty. For a lawyer to think a bit of doggerel is the equivalent of either law or public policy is disturbing, to say the least.

The Constitution, as others before me, have said, is not a suicide pact — and it’s especially not a suicide pact mandating unlimited immigration in order to keep Democrat voters flowing to the polls.

All of the above, of course, are substantive points. The problem for American discourse is that Democrats, like all narcissists, don’t traffic in substantive points. They are cornered rats who resort to vicious attacks meant to draw blood. And what better “bloody” word today than “racist”? So, rather than counter with facts and logic those who wish to shape American immigration so that it benefits America be welcoming in people from all corners who embrace our values, Democrats are screaming “racism!” Trump, they insist, despite a long history serving immigrant communities — and despite color-blind policies that have hugely benefited black and Hispanic people — in fact hates black people and Hispanics.

The reality is that anyone actually paying attention will have noticed that Trump is not alleged to have said anything about colors or race — and that’s true whether Dick Durbin, a man known for being loose with the truth, accurately or inaccurately quoted the president. (My money’s on the latter.) It was Democrats who inserted racism into the issue by associating blacks and Hispanics with “shitholes.” Their association; not Trump’s.

Isn’t that racist kind of word association typical for Democrats? Give them a derogatory term and their innate racism kicks in.

Before I get to examples of this predictable Democrat racism, I’d like you first to refresh your memory of the famous “Nudge, nudge, wink, wink” Monty Python sketch in which a leering Eric Idle brilliantly projects his salacious thoughts on an entirely innocent Terry Jones:

Terry Jones is has no complicity in or responsibility for Idle’s sleazy fantasies. The same is true for conservatives, who judge people by their values (something over which they have control) rather than by their skin color (which is up to God or Nature, whichever you believe). It’s the Democrats who impute nasty meanings to innocently uttered phrases (at least innocently uttered in racial terms).

Up until Trump’s alleged racism went viral, the most recent example of this pathological racist projection was the Left’s fury over an H&M advertisement. Be honest with me: When you see the image below, do you think “My son (or grandson) would love that sweatshirt” or do you think “Black people are monkeys”?

I can say without hesitation that I think the former. Democrats and fellow Leftists, also without hesitation, think the latter. We shouldn’t be surprised. Democrats have likened blacks to monkeys and apes for more than a century.

The boy’s mother, incidentally, who is African herself, fully understands that there is no connection between her son and simians. But to a Democrat, the racist association is instantaneous. Black people are apes. And just as some say the Germans have never forgiven the Jews for Auschwitz, so too is it true that the Democrats cannot forgive Trump and other conservatives for reminding Democrats just how nasty the racism-brined Democrat brain is.

Here’s another example: The word “thug.” To me, a thug is a street-level criminal. That’s all. If I want to dig deeper, I might enjoy the fact that it’s a borrowed word, from the Hindi word “thag,” which translates literally to a “rogue” or a “cheat.” I’ve always liked word origin stories.

But to the Democrat, thug, being a word with negative connotations, is code for a black person. I use it innocently, as did Terry Jones, but the Left, in full Eric Idle mode, makes it racist and then has the temerity to blame me (or any other literate conservative who accurately uses the word).

When President Bush appointed Condi Rice as his Secretary of State, Democrats promptly engaged in an orgy of racist imagery against her. (During and immediately after the Bush years, the fact is that they flung racist imagery against any conservative black person.)

Yet another example of the Democrats’ reflexive habit of associating minorities with negative concepts is the Democrats’ insistence that, when Trump said that Mexico was not sending us its best people, he was guilty of open racism. You and I understood that Trump was saying that Mexico, like all nations, is home to a variety of people, ranging from the exemplary to the Charles Mansons of the world. We also understood that he was saying that Mexico has a nasty habit of purging its country of the Charles Manson types by encouraging them to immigrate illegally to America. That’s not a slur against Mexicans. After all, we have our home grown Charles Mansons. It is, instead, a realistic statement of a despicable policy from a neighboring country, unrelated to race.

And of course, there’s the latest example of the Democrats’ race hatred: Dick Durbin’s dubious claim that President Trump questioned why Americans would want an influx of immigrants from “shithole countries.” When I hear the phrase “shithole countries,” I think of those countries with the toxic values I described above. Race is not on my list. I bet you’re the same.

To Democrats, though, “shithole” can mean only one thing: Black or Hispanic. That’s their word association. It’s their Rorschach test. It’s they who are the racists. They are the evil, disgusting ones who routinely associates blacks and Hispanics with all that is vile and criminal in this world.

I am not making friends (or, probably, keeping them) on Facebook now. That’s because, as I go through my Progressive friends’ post and finding them hurling the worst kind of invective at Trump for his alleged racism, I keep pointing out to them that, under any telling of the story, Trump never mentioned race. The negative racial connotations are all theirs. They are the racists. They’re the ones who heard the dog whistle. On this Alinsky nailed it. I’m making them live up to their own rules.

(Sorry if this is a bit of a choppy post. It started in my mind as a uniform whole, but I got interrupted so often, it fell into little puzzle pieces of ideas.)

I’ll give the last (somewhat vulgar) words to Paul Joseph Watson who nails things as he usually does:

*I realized as I wrote those words that, if Hollywood were a separate country, we wouldn’t want immigrants from there either, given that community’s anti-Americanism, and its sordid, predatory sexual practices against men, women, and children.

While it’s not a cartoon, this is laugh-out-loud funny (along with a huge dose of common sense and “I am not a victim” thinking):

And it’s time for my favorite Christmas carol. I never get tired of this:
