The media once hid Democrat craziness; now it trumpets it

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, the media did its best to normalize Democrat craziness; today, though, the media trumpets Democrat craziness. That’s scary.

I was a child in the 1960s and a teen in the 1970s. Every morning, along with my parents, I read the San Francisco Chronicle while we ate breakfast. Every evening at dinner we all watched Walter Cronkite. I remember the nightly sense of satisfaction as Cronkite signed off with “And that’s the way it is.”

In the 1980s, after Cronkite’s retirement, we switched to Peter Jennings. My Mom had a crush on him; he was, after all, smoothly good-looking with a Canadian savoir-faire that appealed to my European parents. In the 1980s too my parents discovered Ted Koppel — “he’s so smart and, you know, he’s Jewish.” And through it all, they always read the Chronicle. By the 1980s, I was out of the house, but I still remember the prominent role played in our lives by what we now call the “mainstream” or “drive-by” media.

Here’s the thing about the media in those days: We believed it. We believed it implicitly. Walter Cronkite said “that’s the way it is” and we knew with certainty that this was true: Whatever he just told us was indeed the way it was. Cronkite was, after all, “the most trusted man in America.”

I don’t think young people today can imagine the shock to our system when we later learned that Cronkite’s famously stated opinion that America had lost the war in Vietnam after the Tet Offensive was 180 degrees wrong. In fact, after the Tet Offensive, the American military was in its best position ever since entering Vietnam. Cronkite’s preeminence in the American psyche, however, turned a huge American military victory into an even bigger Viet Cong propaganda victory. But we only learned that later.

In real time, I believe the 1960s media was genuinely shocked by the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago. The middle class men in the American media were also repulsed by the hippies, although the hippies also worked a peculiar fascination on these men who still wore gray flannel suits. These social/cultural attitudes helped the media stay in contact with middle America. Despite those narrow repulsions, the media was already on board with dramatically increasing government’s role in American life, as well as with the new environmentalism (we’re all going to freeze to death), and with loosening America’s traditional sexual morality of marriage and family.

Thus, looking back, it’s obvious that the media in my childhood and teen years relentlessly propagandized for Democrats and they did so by normalizing those politicians. Kennedy was a god king, with the media ensuring that his health problems, his bungling in Cuba (which almost brought the world to nuclear war), and his relentlessly predatory sexual behavior stayed completely off the radar (an approach helped, in great part, by Kennedy’s close friendship with Ben Bradlee who basked in the glow of a god king president). Likewise, the media focused on Johnson being a good ole boy, while carefully hiding his disgusting behavior, and rank, crude, racist political calculations.

When Nixon came to power, even before Watergate brought him down, the same media that propped up Kennedy and Johnson relentlessly highlighted Nixon’s fundamental evilness. When Ford took over, this graceful athlete and decent man was turned into a bumbling fool. The media tried to prop Carter up as long as it could, until it simply couldn’t any more. There was no way it could downplay the lust in his heart, his lust for the Polish people, the killer rabbit, or that dreadful malaise speech. Still, media types weren’t too troubled when they attacked Carter both because they thought that Teddy Kennedy’s primary challenge would smooth the way into an even better Democrat administration and, when that failed, that Reagan couldn’t possibly win.

And oh my God! The shivs came out when Reagan became president. He was an actor. He was stupid. He confused his movie plots with real life. On and on and on it went. No wonder, when Reagan died, that the media was completely befuddled by the outpouring of grief. Still, compared to 21st century attacks on Republican presidents, the media still tried to present itself as a friend of middle America. It was attacking Reagan because it cared about America, not because it hated America. Bush Sr. too got treated badly. (I still don’t like him nor do I look fondly on his presidency.)

The media couldn’t cheer Billary enough. They were the magical, cool, hip, two-for-one dynamo, and we were told that, whatever you do, ignore Whitewater and the bizarre trail of deaths and rape/sexual assault claims in their wake, because those accusations all come from a cabal of right wing wackos.

And so it went, with the media constantly playing defense for Billary, savaging Bush Jr., and worshiping Obama.

In other words, at least since the 1960s, the media was always in the Left’s corner. Still, it was a different time — a simpler, more naive time, and a time without an alternative media. Back in those days, so many of us thought, along with Cronkite, that “that’s the way it was.”

As many Americans saw it, especially the burgeoning class of college educated Americans, people in the media — college educated themselves, and so obviously smooth and sophisticated as they read from TelePrompters we didn’t realize existed — had a completely rational bias towards equally sophisticated and educated candidates (as opposed to actors and Texans who weren’t LBJ). But they weren’t lying. They couldn’t be lying. They were journalists. They were professionals. We’d traveled two or three decades away from the crazed reporters portrayed in classic movies such as Roxie Hart or His Girl Friday. Bias, yes. Lying, no.

And as the nightly news and the daily papers always portrayed it, there was no crazy. Sure, hippies were crazy and Republican politicians were stupid, but Democrat politicians were always on the side of all that was right and good, gently advancing nice middle class values on behalf of decent people who just wanted to make the world a better place.

Fast forward to 2019, a world of Fox News, talk radio, and the internet. Today, Americans distrust the media, a distrust that even extends to those who agree with the media’s ideological slant. Slant? What am I talking about. It’s a steep slope, a deep dive, a sheer cliff into advanced Leftism.

But here’s where I’m finally getting to my point. It’s not just that we have Fox News, talk radio, and the internet that Americans distrust the media. It’s because the media has gone insane. Really, truly, literally (as in literally, not “Bad Touch” Biden’s non-literally literally) insane.

You’d think that, with the media unabashedly in favor of Democrat candidates, having long ago torn of even the last vestige of impartiality, that it would double down on its efforts to smooth out any rough edges in Democrat candidates. Thus, you’d expect a repeat of those dignified broadcasts from the 1960s, when Democrats were universally portrayed as totally, wonderfully normal Americans who could walk into any house in America, whether in San Francisco or Kansas City, and be right at home. We’d have a classy repeat of the 1960s, when those who still foolishly voted for Republicans always had to hold their noses, while those who voted Democrat were bathed in golden light because they were voting for all that was pure and honest.

But something funny happened, which was that the media not only stopped hiding the weirdness behind the Democrat candidates, it started reveling in it. Once upon a time, the media sided (or at least pretended to side) with middle Americans about hippies being icky, dirty, lazy, and dangerous. Today, it chastises middle Americans for daring to believe

  • that there are only two genders;
  • that the world, having failed to explode in environmental Armageddon in 2000, will also fail to do so in 20-whatever the next predicted year of Armageddon is;
  • that while all Muslims are not terrorists, most terrorists today are Muslims;
  • that it’s anti-Semitic to repeat centuries’ old stereotypes tying together Jews, money, political influence, and dual loyalties, because those same stereotypes have invariably been a prelude to the exile and slaughter of Jews;
  • that socialism is a horrible political system which, by vesting all power in government, invariably leads to the dehumanization of the individual and the death of liberty, and that too often ends in mass starvation and death; and
  • that Martin Luther King was right when he said that people should be judged by the content of their character rather than by external markers such as skin color (his concern) or (modern concerns) race, country of national origin, sex, or sexual orientation.

Those truths (and they are true), are now anathema to the media. If a candidate doesn’t insist on 57 genders, imminent climate Armageddon, the exquisite purity of the Islamist soul, the fact that Jews are indeed evil, the wonders of socialism, and the preeminence of superficial differences over shared values, all of it wrapped up in a big “America hatred” bow, the media will have no truck with that candidate. Look at how savage members of the press are with the anodyne, boring, anemic Howard Schultz, who is as close to a 1960s Democrat candidate as we’re likely to find.

Back in the 1960s, had the Leftist media (and it was indeed Leftist then) gotten a good look at today’s Democrat candidates, it would have done two things: It either would have used its influence to destroy them ASAP before they tainted the Democrat political brand or they would have downplayed the crazy. Today, though, they embrace the crazy and, indeed, encourage it.

I can only hope that after 50 years of Leftist control over news, entertainment and, most importantly, K-Post Doc education, Americans are still capable of recognizing insanity when they see it and still have the wisdom to reject it. Trump may be bombastic, but he’s honest where it counts and every initiative he’s done has benefited all Americans, whether in terms of the economy or national security. That’s reality, kiddos. Reality urges you to ride the horse instead of standing there waiting for the unicorn.

Long-time BK Dem Assemblyman Hikind Reads Schumer the Riot Act, Vows to Back GOP

After receiving an email soliciting donations from Senator Schmuck, correction Chuck Schumer, long-time ally, Dov Hikind and Democratic Assemblyman of the New York’s State legislature representing Brooklyn posted an open letter to his Facebook page lambasting Schumer also from Brooklyn.

SIDEBAR

On a personal note, I have followed Hikind for decades, even after I left the Democratic Party. Hikind represents a large Jewish community in Brooklyn a short distance from where I live (used to be an even shorter distance prior to all of the gerrymandering). During the past eight years, there were changes in his district and the surrounding area that I felt were not good for the community,Jewish and otherwise and certainly not good for Americans. For whatever reason, Hikind and many Jewish leaders remained silent. I suspect that they may have felt outnumbered by the growing Muslim, immigration and illegal alien community that converged upon certain areas of Brooklyn, far too many of whom are anti-Semitic. Very disappointing.

END OF SIDEBAR

So put off by Schumer’s email, that in his open letter entitled:

DEMOCRAT HIKIND RESPONDS TO SCHUMER’S PLEA FOR DONATIONS WITH ‘HELL NO!’

COUNTERS SLAM ON ‘HARD RIGHT AGENDA’ WITH UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTHS ABOUT ‘HARD LEFT’

Hikind lambasted Schumer for a mailer that villainized President Donald J. Trump, assault the “hard right” and promised “to fight ‘for Democratic values’ while providing little in means of substance.” Also addressed was the Senate Minority Leader’s omission of those achievements by President Donald J. Trump’s that are beneficial to all Americans, achievements of which their constituents have not been informed and of which Democrats attempted to obstruct. [my emphasis on the latter.]

Not a problem, Hikind was more than willing to fill in the blanks. Excerpts below:

“You forgot to tell us about the economy. As good as it’s been, economists expect even more growth through the end of the year. That’s very good news, Senator.

“You forgot to tell us about unemployment, which is lower than it has been in decades, while economic confidence is at a 17-year high. It’s also at a record low for minorities. That’s very good news, Senator.

“You forgot to tell us how the U.S. is beginning to emerge in energy dominance. The Department of Interior, which has led the way in cutting regulations, opened plans to lease 77 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico for oil and gas drilling, decreasing our reliance on foreign oil. That’s very good news, Senator.

Then, of course, there is the matter of moving the U. S. Embassy to Jerusalem….

“You forgot to tell us about the most remarkable relationship between the United States and our ally Israel ever. Or about moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, which you yourself applauded.

And the Iran deal. Originally, Schumer opposed Barack Obama’s Iran deal. His radical opposition to President Trump’s dismantling of Obama’s Iran deal is hypocritical and misguided.

“You forgot to tell us about the successful dismantling of the Iran Deal—a deal which you yourself opposed and knew threatened the rest of the world by making it easier for Iran, the leading supporter of world terrorism, to develop nuclear weapons.

On the bias against Jews, Caucasians and Asians on campuses across the country:

“You forgot to tell us that the Trump administration is against the harmful reverse-discrimination criteria in universities that would so badly hurt the children from hard-working Asian families. So much for the big tent, Senator.

Hikind ends his open letter by putting Progressive leadership on notice that until Schumer has restored “sanity and honesty” to the Democratic Party, he will support the Republican Party.

Exact quote:

“Senator Schumer, as a fellow Democrat, I ask you to work to restore sanity and honesty to our party so I can feel good about supporting it fully. Until then, I’m afraid the Republicans have my support.”

The Bookworm Beat 8/31/17 — another “Leftist insanity” edition

There’s so much Leftist insanity that one Bookworm Beat wasn’t enough to contain it all. It takes two posts to grasp what’s really going on.

The craven FBI refuses to stop Leftist insanity. Although the mainstream media is silent, the conservative media is appropriately outraged that James Comey had already decided in April or May of 2016, in the very early stages of the investigation into Hillary’s national security violations, to clear her of wrongdoing. That is, his decision came about far in advance of the evidence — and nobody in the FBI called him on it.

I’m disgusted but not surprised that the FBI’s employees would do nothing about their head’s manifest violation of his duty to Americans. You see, I already predicted this outcome in early April 2016:

No matter how principled they’d like to think they are, most middle-class people will turn a blind eye to corruption in their midst rather than run the risk of being unable to pay their mortgage or fund all of the other payments necessary to support a middle-class lifestyle. They don’t think of themselves as dishonest or complicit in dishonesty. They think of themselves as cautious people who aren’t going to risk their children’s future for some grand-standing that, rather than resulting in applause, could leave them unemployed and desperate.

This episode from my past makes me doubt very strongly that Hillary Clinton will be indicted. I know that the rumor mill keeps saying that FBI agents, from Comey on down, will quit if Loretta Lynch lets Hillary walk. Some of the FBI agents whispering this to friendly reporters may even believe that they’ll quit.

Mostly, though, this is a bluff. Why? Because the people talking about quitting are middle-class people with mortgages, and school fees, and insurance, and all the other expenses that keep us in the middle-class living up to our own expectations. If Hillary really does walk, 99% of those “I’ll quit if she’s not indicted” agents will manage, very quickly and easily, to convince themselves to stay in their jobs, and get their salaries and pensions.

Was Jim Crow a cruel but necessary reality? David P. Goldman couldn’t writing something boring if he tried. His most recent post riffs off the fact that the North allowed the South the illusion of victory for almost 100 years after the Civil War. According to Goldman, this was an unpleasant necessity required to protect America against foreign threats and analogizes it to the West’s necessary decision to absorb former Nazis to protect against the Communist threat.

I’m not familiar enough with America’s foreign policy in the years between the Civil War and WWI to judge critically what Goldman wrote, but it’s an interesting argument. Certainly America needed its Southern fighters in WWI and WWII. Indeed, we still need them today.

Some Leftist Jews are catching on to the Left’s antisemitism. Lately, I’ve been totally obnoxious on Facebook. Every time my Facebook friends goes off about neo-Nazis in Charlottesville and antisemitism, I’ve stated in bold language that I don’t take them seriously because they’ve completely ignored the fact that, for well over a decade now, I’ve made them aware of the vile, pervasive, normalized antisemitism in the Democrat party and, especially, on American campuses.

Thankfully, a few Leftist Jews are figuring out that their Leftist cohorts are not feeling the love. At Forward, a Leftist Jewish publication, Benyamin Moalem says what I’ve said forever, which is that antisemitism (and racism) on the right consists of a few bottom feeders, while antisemitism on the Left is large, mainstream, and very dangerous. After discussing Roger Waters (who revels in antisemitic imagery the Nazis would have loved) and the aggressive antisemitism on campuses, Moalem has this to say:

But left wing anti-Semitism is even more dangerous than its Nazi counterpart in some respects, for the simple fact that while Nazis are considered beyond the pale of what is accepted by civil society, left wing anti-Semitism is increasingly considered “legitimate” because it can hide behind widely accepted liberal ideas like anti-Zionism, for example.

Exactly. Also, in the Toronto Sun, Lorrie Goldstein comes out with guns blazing to explain why he won’t side with Antifa. Except for the entirely undue respect he gives Ha’aretz, Israel’s hard-Left paper, he’s right on every point. Here’s just a sample:

For anyone who thinks the hard, violent left is a friend of the Jewish people, here’s a fun little assignment.

Next time, let yourself be surrounded by them during one of their riots — anywhere in the world — bring out an Israeli flag and start talking about what a great country Israel is.

Watch what happens.

Spare us the drivel, which the liberal chattering classes spout ad nauseam, and which provides intellectual cover for the hard, violent left, that you can criticize Israel without being a Jew hater.

Of course you can criticize Israel, the occupation and its treatment of the Palestinians and not be a Jew hater.

Jews do it. Israelis do it. The respected Israeli newspaper Haaretz, does it. For gawd’s sake, so do former heads of the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security service, the equivalent of the FBI, just as the foreign security service, the Mossad, is similar to the CIA.

But that’s not how the hard, violent left constantly demonizes and delegitimizes the Jewish state of Israel, while turning a blind eye to greater human rights abuses all over the world, including, to compare apples to apples, in The Islamic Republic of Iran and The Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

I’m uninterested in Europe’s take on Charlottesville. A reader thoughtfully sent me an article from NPR explaining how Charlottesville looks to Europeans. The gist of the article is that Europeans, especially German, who surround themselves with memorials to Nazi victims, while making illegal any Nazi insignia, are shocked and bewildered.

I say phooey to what the Europeans think. I’m unimpressed by their condescending shock and bewilderment.

The reality is that the Europeans are importing millions of people whose Jew hatred may even exceed that of the Nazis, and the Europeans are resolutely turning a blind eye to this hatred, thereby giving it the freedom to grow. The Europeans therefore have nothing useful to say about antisemitism or racism. They are rank hypocrites who, having failed to kill off their Jews in the Middle Ages, and having failed again to kill them in the 20th century, are now going in for a third try with imported Jew killers. The only good thing that can be said about this effort is the knowledge that, once the Jew-killers are done with the Jews (those few who won’t or can’t leave), they’ll turn on the Europeans too. I’m only sorry for the small cohort of decent, conservative people still living in Europe who are trapped in the Hell of Leftist insanity.

Little girls marrying big men. Speaking of Muslims…. Well, I don’t know whether I’m actually speaking of Muslims. What I know is that HuffPo (via Yahoo) has an article about the rash of child marriages in America. These are marriages in which, usually with help from the family, grown men marry little girls.

Interestingly, the article is utterly silent about which groups are particularly prone to marry grown men and little girls. Hmmm. Do you think it’s the Episcopalians? The Unitarians? The Reform Jews? The Catholics? You’re right. I don’t think so either.

The Pope goes animist. I don’t like Pope Francis, whom I view as a Leftist in religious clothing. (For more on my feelings about him, you can go here. For a related post, about the Leftist effort to turn America into a Christian theocracy — the Left’s definition of “Christian,” of course — go here.) Despite his Leftism, I’ve still thought of Francis as part of the monotheistic Western tradition. Apparently, though, there’s a strong animist strain running through him, which is a decidedly un- and pre-Christian world view:

Pope Francis, who has a strong belief in the science of climate change, called upon world leaders on Wednesday to “listen to the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor, who suffer most because of the unbalanced ecology.” [Emphasis mine.]

Whatever is the opposite of the greatest generation is what we’ve got. The Greatest Generation waded into one of the bloodiest clashes in Western history. They stormed beaches and fought inch by bloody inch to conquer treacherous islands. Meanwhile, back in 21st century America:

A Greek Life retreat at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) was promptly cancelled this weekend after a banana peel was found hanging in a tree.

“To be clear, many members of our community were hurt, frightened, and upset by what occurred at IMPACT,” Interim Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Alexa Lee Arndt remarked in an email between Greek leaders, according to The Daily Mississippian. “Because of the underlying reality many students of color endure on a daily basis, the conversation manifested into a larger conversation about race relations today at the University of Mississippi.”

Apparently, student Ryan Swanson admitted to discarding the banana peel in a tree after he was unable to locate a garbage can, and it was later spotted by Alpha Kappa Alpha President Makala McNeil, who leads one of the campuses historically black sororities.

A couple of things. First, it’s mostly blacks who associate themselves with bananas. I doubt few whites do. That dog whistle is on the blacks. Second, even if the banana had been a hostile racial act, shouldn’t those against whom the act was aimed fight back with strength, rather than retreat in weak and tearful disorder?

I don’t even have words to describe this profoundly mentally ill, deeply dysfunctional generation of young people we’ve raised up. It would merely be tragic if it weren’t so dangerous.

Fashion editor takes the “trolling” concept literally. We talk about “trolling” people on line, but we don’t really mean to talk about trolls — you know, that squat, ugly characters of myth. However, over at Vogue, the magazine managed to haul out of a cave a genuine troll, who then took it upon herself to criticize Melania Trump’s fashion sense. (See photo at the top of this post.) Once again, Leftist insanity takes us beyond satire.

Australians take their trivia seriously. At least, they take it seriously on a road that’s so dull the government has posted trivia questions and answers at intervals in an effort to keep drivers alert. I can think of some roads in Nevada that could benefit from this, not to mention I-5 in California.

Those generic millenials. A company called Dissolve went through its stock footage and came up with an incredibly funny generic commercial reaching out to today’s millennials:

(If the video doesn’t play, you can see it here.)

Just weird. Usually, when you put marchers or dancers to the wrong kind of music, it looks funny. This is one of my favorite examples, with a goth rave turning into a silly child’s dance:

However, if you put goose-stepping North Koreans to the BeeGees’ Staying Alive, they still look scary. They just look weird and scary:

For a palette cleanser, enjoy the lovely Rita Hayworth, who floats to the same BeeGees’ song:

I Cross My Hear…Er, Arms…

NOOOOOOOO!

By: Mike McDaniel    Mrs. Manor and I were chatting over supper–our favorite Chinese buffet–this evening about the insanity of the left. Actually, we’re merely seeing, without any attempt at concealment, what they actually are. These are not tolerant, rational, and kindly people, but raving totalitarians. They do not believe in democracy in general, and certainly not in our representative republic.
