“There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I, we’ve been through that, and this is not our fate,
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late.”
All Along the Watchtower – Bob Dylan (covered by Jimi Hendrix)
Lots of people talk falsely when using the term “racist,” a point Bookworm Room makes in brilliantly ironic fashion in her winning post Redefining the word racist so that it suits ME. Here’s a taste of the winning post:
I’m a racist because, in San Francisco in the 1960s and 1970s, I saw non-English speaking Asians fresh from the Killing Fields of Cambodia, the prisons of Vietnam, and the horror of the Great Leap forward all arrive in America and immediately begin working and studying, so that their children could enjoy the American dream — and I believe that only liberal condescension and paralyzing social programs stand in the way of both blacks and Hispanics making the same strides.
But, as they say in the blogosphere, read the whole thing.
The winning non-council entry was Cato Unbound’s The Rise of the New Paternalism, which isn’t about speaking falsely but about how meanings and baselines change until what once seemed extreme has become the norm. Specifically in this case it is about how government intervention starts innocously but slowly and surely becomes more intrusive. The observation is as simple as it is brilliant and has many applications outside of the specific concern of the writer.
