Transgender Obsession

By: Mike McDaniel    With few exceptions, none of which come to mind at the moment, everything Barack Obama and his Obamites did to the American military was destructive. It may therefore be understood that undoing any of those social justice initiatives is not only worthwhile, but necessary if our military is to be prepared for the challenges of the world Obama left us. With this in mind, rational Americans should embrace–and they do, by around a 75% margin–President Trump’s declaration banning transgender service. This would include paying for hormone treatments, sex reassignment surgery, and any and all other related medical treatments:

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Of Staff, Marine General Joseph Dunford, sent a communication through the ranks, which was, of course, leaked to the media, about the issue, as Reuters reports:

“I know there are questions about yesterday’s announcement on the transgender policy by the President,’ Dunford wrote.

‘There will be no modifications to the current policy until the President’s direction has been received by the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary has issued implementation guidance,’ Dunford said in the message, first reported by Reuters.”

Leftists and the media (I repeat myself) are trying to make something of this.  Ignoring the leak, there is nothing unusual.  Military-wide policy changes must go through the proper channels to be uniformly implemented.

The LGBTQWERTY “community,” of course, went berserk, as illustrated by an editorial written by an openly gay reporter, Steve Petrow, in The Washington Post:

“Out of the blue, with no new data and the same team of generals, President Trump has decided that he wants to reinstate the ban on transgender people in the military, reversing Obama administration regulations allowing all men and women, regardless of gender identity, to serve their country.

This is the same man who, when running for office, claimed to be a friend of the LGBT community. Perhaps he’s forgotten that the ‘T’ stands for ‘transgender.’

Make no mistake, the president’s anti-transgender offensive is an attack on the entire LGBT community and on our core American belief in equality of opportunity.”

Let us put aside, for the moment–I’ll address it shortly–there is no such “equality of opportunity” in this issue.

“With no rationale, and no new data or studies, the president has thrown the LGBT community — and notably transgender people — under the bus. Conservative groups such as the Family Research Council, long apposed to LGBT equality, applauded the president’s move, especially his termination of what they called a ‘social experiment.”

I’m not often on the side of the Family Research Council, but in this case, they’re calling it a social experiment because it is a social experiment. Petrow made the inevitable, and false, comparison:

“It’s an interesting footnote that on the same date in 1948, President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981, which abolished racial discrimination in the military. He called for ‘equality of treatment and opportunity in the military.’

My question for President Trump: Why does that same principle not apply to transgender Americans who want to serve their country?”

Let’s see if we can come to an understanding of why Petrow’s assumptions are faulty.

Purpose:

The military services exist to kill the enemies of the United States. We equip them to do so with overwhelming violence and force, to keep our casualties as low as possible, and to deter our enemies. During the Obama years, our military was not only neglected, but treated as a leftist social experimentation laboratory for favorite progressive victim groups. Military members were forced to fight global warming, and to spend precious time training in diversity, inclusion, and why letting men pee with women is the highest expression of American patriotism.

In a world where our most dangerous and deranged enemies are building nuclear weapons, when terrorists have killed military members on American soil, where China is forcing South Korea and Japan to go nuclear, and where terrorist cells are operating throughout America and the world, Obamites were most concerned that transgenders received whatever expensive medical treatment pleased them. Readiness and effectiveness were not their concern, and as a result, our military is in bad shape indeed, with Marine mechanics scrounging at museums and aircraft boneyards, often fruitlessly, for parts to keep jets in the air.

For eight long years, war fighters were forced out of the military. Many progressive posterior bussers remain firmly entrenched in the highest ranks of the military. This is part of the swamp Mr. Trump is working to drain as he returns our military to a war fighting force.

Military Service:

There is no right to serve in the military. The military, whose ultimate commander in chief is the President of the United States, sets its own entrance policies and qualifications, subject of course, in some ways, to federal law. People may be excluded for all manner of medical, psychological, physical and background issues. By definition, the military will discriminate to ensure it inducts only those fit, in all ways, to kill America’s enemies. The military may also, when it sees fit, discharge those who become unfit for service.

Military Medicine:

Our military has medical corps to ensure our military members are able to fight when necessary, and when wounded in the line of duty, are able to return to the fight. There are moral issues involved, which is why we have the VA to care for those that have borne the battle, and why Mr. Trump is now fighting to return the VA to its actual purpose rather than serving as a country club for corrupt bureaucrats.

Everything in the military is paid for by taxpayers. It’s not free. The military has an obligation to ensure those scarce dollars are used only for the benefit of our military members, not for confused soul’s sexual whims.

Military Rights:

Anyone joining the military voluntarily surrenders some of their constitutional rights. They surrender freedom of speech, association and travel. They surrender, in many circumstances, the freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures. They live under the Uniform Code of Military Justice rather than the civilian rule of law, and they may be punished for refusing to obey orders, and even for failing to behave in a proper, military manner.

Equality, diversity, inclusion, all are irrelevant. Obedience, effectiveness , selflessness and dedication matter.

Anyone joining the military quickly learns it is not–at all and ever–about them. They conform, and their desires and wonderful diversity and uniqueness mean exactly zip, particularly if those desires and diversity get in the way of their carrying out the duties of their MOS (Military Occupational Specialty). The military does not conform to them. No war-fighting force possibly can.

Chain of Command:

The President of the United States is the Commander In Chief of the military. What he says, goes. Anyone that does not like this portion of the Constitution need not apply.

Fitness:

Why aren’t prohibiting black people and transgenders from serving in the military the same thing? It speaks poorly of our schools that anyone would seriously think that a rational question.

In the former case, we speak of irrationally disqualifying an entire race of otherwise potentially qualified people, male and female. Anyone understanding the history of the American military knows that the equality, opportunity to excel, and racial harmony fought for and won in the civilian world was first won in the military. The US military remains an institution where black Americans rise or fail on their own abilities and initiative, where there is equality of opportunity, not, as LGBT activists demand, equality of outcome. Merit matters, not gender or gender confusion. National Review reports:

“The military is no place for social experiments, or really any other social-policy battles, from the left or the right. The stakes are too high. The only issue in determining who serves in the military should be military fitness, readiness, and loyalty. Any deviation from those priorities gets people killed. Unfortunately, liberals and progressives have a habit of (1) hand-waving away any issues presented by, say, introducing women into previously all-male combat units, and then (2) setting about complaining that the culture of those units needs to change to accommodate women. We can expect the same pattern here.”

Perhaps the most significant argument is transgenderism, with few exceptions, renders those suffering from it unable to carry out military duties. Again, with very few exceptions, every transgender, or “gender fluid” in the current vernacular, person I have known was so obsessed with their gender issues they were incapable of effectively functioning in school, the workplace, or the military. They were fundamentally unstable personalities. Their gender confusion was almost their entire focus in life. National Review explains further:

“There are arguments both ways on this (although as usual, liberal commentary on the matter uniformly assumes that it’s completely impossible for there to ever be two sides to the argument). On the one hand, you can look anecdotally at individuals who have served successfully. On the other hand, the stress of combat brings to the fore all sorts of mental and emotional vulnerabilities, and by definition, you’re dealing here with a population of people suffering a mental disconnect with their own bodies, and who as a result have highly elevated rates of suicide and other major mental and emotional issues (to say nothing of ongoing requests for surgeries, therapies, and the like). One study, done in 2015 by the National Center for Transgender Equality found, for example:

Fifty three percent (53%) of USTS respondents aged 18 to 25 reported experiencing current serious psychological distress [compared to 10% of the general population] . . . Forty percent (40%) of respondents have attempted suicide at some point in their life, compared to 4.6% in the U.S. population. Forty-eight percent (48%) of respondents have seriously thought about killing themselves in the past year, compared to 4% of the U.S. population, and 82% have had serious thoughts about killing themselves at some point in their life . . . 29% of respondents reported illicit drug use, marijuana consumption, and/or nonmedical prescription drug use in the past month, nearly three times the rate in the U.S. population (10%). . . . The prevalence of HIV and AIDS has been found in prior research to be higher among transgender people than in the U.S. general population. . . .”

Final Thoughts:

I trust I don’t need to go into the effect of obsessed transgenders on military units. Transgender men do demand to use women’s showers and bathrooms and to otherwise mix with women. Military women are not amused any more than civilian fathers and husbands are amused when transgender men want to use the same bathrooms as their daughters and wives, and progressive legislators and judges are only too happy to oblige. Our military needs to focus on other issues.

Mr. Trump has the lawful authority to do this, and his reasons are rational and compelling. We must certainly expect the Left to wage lawfare, and they will certainly find leftist judges willing to impose progressive policy in violation of the law, but he will–he must–ultimately win for the common good, just as Barack Obama was able to impose his will, to the detriment of America and the World, during his term in office.

This is a political winner for Mr. Trump and America, but even if it were not, our military has been a political football for every leftist pathology for far too long. It’s past time to let rough men and women stand ready to do violence on our behalf instead of singing the praises of political correctness and global oneness. We could all, with the exception of the perpetually aggrieved, use a good night’s sleep.
