Lately it occurs to me
What a long strange trip it’s been
Truckin’ – The Grateful Dead
Recently the New York Times juxtaposed a picture of a Weathermen’s march in the late 60′s with a recent Tea Party Protest. Whether one is offended by the comparision or understands it as a warped compliment by the Times, what’s happened is that what was once the counterculture is now the establishment, and, as argued in a number of this week’s council and non-council posts, with it the absolute confidence of the rightness of its causes is now projected by the government. (One council member argues that this infects all of political discourse now.)
Of course, this may not be the strangest trip we’re witnessing these days, what with Jerry Garcia selling upscale ties in stores like Macy’s fifteen years after his death. It’s hard to imagine dead guys being more grateful than Garcia is these days!
